The Culture of Forgetting is an installation that celebrates the many faces and stories, backgrounds and beginnings of Melburnians.
Melbourne has been transformed by absorbing a myriad of cultures. We hear about their connection to Melbourne as well as their lives, homes, stories and worlds they may have left behind.
The installation consists of a series of photographic portraits as well as sound recordings of stories told by the subjects. A photo of each storyteller is placed in the foyer of the Malthouse Theatre and the stories are played through speakers while audiences’ view the portraits from the comfort of a cosy beanbag, leaving them to match each story with a portrait.
